The Nissan is running happily again, with a new ignition coil and new spark plugs, and my daily commute is again accompanied by my iPod.

Today, John McLaughlin’s multitracked acoustic guitar version of Bill Evans’ Very Early came on. I flashed back to 1982 and how in the year or two after hearing McLaughlin’s version, I got the Real Book (of jazz standards) in Boston (under the counter at a copy shop), found the tune, and worked out my own fairly intricate arrangement based loosely on my recollection of McLaughlin’s.

I remembered how, when I’d play Very Early on the piano at my parents’ house, my Dad would sometimes remark on how much he liked it.

Then I noticed that the license plate of the car I was passing contained his initials (DKW).

Yes, it sounds utterly wacky to say that God speaks to me through license plates. But really, I think the universe speaks to us through whatever we pay sufficient attention to.

That’s the window to my office, after the first few giddy moments with the new paint sprayer. It’s surprisingly fun and easy to use, though my back and neck weren’t as impressed on Monday. We found out how far a gallon goes (I bought 11 on sale Memorial Day weekend, and that might not be enough).

That shows a bit better how faded and in need of protection the cedar siding is in places. And reminds me to find a roofer.

This weekend Lori and I did some work at her rental property in
Roseville. The gate was broken so we pulled it down, replaced a few
slats and a brace, and I painted it. We got stonewalled (groan!)
trying to get some toggle bolts into the stucco though. We’ll have to
finish that next weekend.
