Saw Miles from India at the SF Jazz festival Friday night. I haven’t heard the CD but the live show included a less impressive set of Miles alumni. There were moments of sheer brilliance separated by periods of rhythmically incoherent jamming. The best moments had one or two players stepping to the front: trumpeter Wallace Rooney (? he’s credited on the album and I believe that’s who we saw), Robert Irving III, David Liebman, and each of the three Indian percussionists had standout solos. A couple of the players unfortunately caused more cringing than enjoyment, however.
It seems that the producer took a combination that worked well in the studio, under more controlled conditions, and tried to replicate the formula live with a group of somewhat lesser musicians and probably less rehearsal and leadership.
I do suspect I’d enjoy the album.
