A friend used to marvel at how complicated I was capable of making things. Why did I partition my hard drive and put my home directory on a separate volume? (So I can completely wipe the drive containing the OS and start over at any time. It happens at least once a week when you’re developing an OS.)
Why did I manage my iPod’s music manually? At first it had something to do with the original iPod’s capacity being 5 GB... or was it not having 5 GB to spare on my computer... then 20 GB... And why should I back up my huge collection of pristine CD’s in lossily-encoded formats on my computer? Well, whatever. I have seen the light.
Senuti copied all of the files from my trusty iPod Photo back to the Mac. iTunes is pretty cool about preserving last-play information when re-reripping a CD at a higher quality, and even syncing it back from an iPhone.
Now I just maintain playlists on the Mac of what I want to listen to in the car. One album queue, one “radio” playlist (recently-added combined with not-recently-played). I sync the playlists to the iPhone, and the last-played information comes back.
