It would appear that the iTunes 8 “Genius” doesn’t actually listen to music and is simply good at knowing “people who like X tend to also like Y”, based on iTunes Store purchasing patterns.
I call this design pattern “More of the Same.” This is not unlike Pandora or Amazon’s recommendations.
(I like this rationalization of being relegated to obscurity; I’d rather be a non-entity in a sales database than never listened to.)
(And the cool thing about Pandora is that it will play full-length tracks that you don’t already own.)
