The Nissan is running happily again, with a new ignition coil and new spark plugs, and my daily commute is again accompanied by my iPod.
Today, John McLaughlin’s multitracked acoustic guitar version of Bill Evans’ Very Early came on. I flashed back to 1982 and how in the year or two after hearing McLaughlin’s version, I got the Real Book (of jazz standards) in Boston (under the counter at a copy shop), found the tune, and worked out my own fairly intricate arrangement based loosely on my recollection of McLaughlin’s.
I remembered how, when I’d play Very Early on the piano at my parents’ house, my Dad would sometimes remark on how much he liked it.
Then I noticed that the license plate of the car I was passing contained his initials (DKW).
Yes, it sounds utterly wacky to say that God speaks to me through license plates. But really, I think the universe speaks to us through whatever we pay sufficient attention to.
