I’ve been musically dry this year. I’ve been playing piano regularly, but the urge to compose, to wander through the maze of painstakingly creating something semi-sensible out of nothingness, appears only infrequently. It did pop up Thursday when listening to Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin, in the form of “this reminds me, not unpleasantly, of me.”
Kimberly Brooks’s The Creative Process in Eight Stages was a nice reminder, a roadmap. I particularly identified with: “The composer Aaron Copland said he didn’t finish compositions so much as abandon them.”
