West Coast Tour, Days 3-4 ::

Fri. 18 Aug. (Day 3)

After an 800-mile round trip to LA and facing another 1700 miles to Seattle and back, we decided to splurge and rent a larger vehicle than Justin’s pickup. We went to a nearby car rental place, looked at one giant SUV with a stupid seat configuration (getting the keyboards in would have been a nightmare) and then settled on a Nissan Pathfinder. It was a definite improvement in comfort for the driver and front-seat passenger, but the third seat in the back was pretty cramped and there was slightly less cargo room.

The back seat was also a bit dangerous, as we discovered when I made a first sharp right turn on the way to the theater in San Francisco. A stand fell on our friend Brett in the back seat. Later we figured out how to get everything pinned down so that couldn’t happen again.

The San Francisco show went well. There were a number of former Opcode coworkers and users in the audience, so Egan had some fun with my pauses to load songs, telling the audeience “this wouldn’t happen in Vision!” Afterwards, many stuck around to help us move gear, then we embarked on an expedition in search of food and alcohol at 11 pm. We ended up at Mel’s Diner having (mostly) breakfast!

Sat. 19 Aug. (Day 4)

We left around 11:30 am for Portland, but fatigue was already a factor—traffic on 101 looked stupid, so I detoured across the San Mateo Bridge, only to miss the turn to I-80 east in Oakland. We crossed the Bay Bridge into San Francisco and immediately turned around and crossed back to Oakland.

The 650 miles to Portland passed slowly. We finally arrived at Joann’s cousin’s around 12:45 am, a bit crabby but very happy to be out of the car.
