There have been lots of discussions with Christoffer and other friends about the album running order, cover art and title. The running order settled down a few days ago. After exploring a lot of art over the last month, one photo just clicked and seemed to stick. The title was the hardest; even after writing out a story to go with the music, it was really hard to distill it into a phrase in that sweet spot between the abstract and concrete. No matter how much I pondered the story, trying to elaborate on it and find just the right few words for a title, it wasn’t budging.
I gave up and decided to go after it another way. What was it about that photo that seemed to fit so well with the music? I put on the album, poured a glass of wine, and stared at the photo as the music played. Around 7 minutes later, I had my title, just a small twist on the one I’d picked last fall and given up on despite Christoffer’s protestations. As the rest of the album played, I put the title on the cover and sent off some JPEGs. Good responses.
(I’ll post a picture after I’ve cleared the rights with the photographer.)
To top it off, I got a long-awaited present at work today: a Firewire disk with 50 GB of raw audio tracks and 600 MB of 16-bit masters from Sweden :-) Wow! There’s nothing like living with unmastered mixes for months to appreciate what mastering adds.
And Keith got the footage from his short film today.
I continued to practice one last solo piano piece I will record in C’s living room on her baby grand on Tuesday. It’s maddening; it’s not that technically difficult, but there’s one 12-bar section which which is melodically really simple, but rhythmically from Mars ... the first half is 5 bars, the remaining 7 bars go 4-4-3-3-4-2-4-4.
