During lunch with Justin the other day, my mind wandered to the challenge of performing my music live. There are some songs calling for bass and drums, and others where I could use two other keyboard players and no drums or bass. Ideally, I’d work with a couple of multi-instrumentalists. I thought of P, an old friend back east, who plays bass, drums, guitar and keyboards. I mentioned him to Justin, and made a mental note to write to P.
On my drive home I was listening to NPR. The announcer came on to tell us that the last program segment was brought to me by Record Company X and Cult Star Y whose new album was now available. Last I’d heard, my friend P was having the time of his life in Y’s band. That was one more reason to write to him, and around midnight I did, floating a vague trial balloon about playing together somehow.
The next morning, P wrote back. He hadn’t seen the email until morning. The previous night he’d had a dream in which I’d been a central figure (!). He was no longer in Y’s band and was more than interested in playing with me again.
There are big logistical hurdles (like being 2800 miles apart), but it seems silly to let details like that get in the way of looking into it :-)
