Sunday night I returned from a weekend trip to find an email from someone who had travelled to Ithaca for Jeremy Werbin’s memorial service some years ago. I’d played a short solo piano medley of his songs from the Zobo Funn Band days; the correspondent remembered it and asked if I’d ever recorded it. I replied:
I wish I could remember exactly what I played! I’d learned the songs in 1979-80 and just pieced them together from memory with the help of some old Zobo tapes, in the few days before the service. I definitely remember playing parts of:
Thunderstruck
When You Shine
Waiting for Sarah
Land of the FloodsBut I think there were 5. I wonder if there was a bit of Is This All That There Is. I might have considered it and decided that the chords were similar to Land of the Floods.
I don’t even remember what year that was (96? 97?), though I do seem to remember it was October. Do you happen to know the date?
I’ll do some playing; sometimes my fingers help my mind remember! I will definitely consider recording the arrangement, or possibly a more elaborate one; I’m a bit inspired. I’ll keep you posted.
I really appreciate your writing.
I did manage to resurrect (so to speak) something that is probably quite close to what I played. Possibly I’ll record it at some point.
The next evening I checked in on Justin’s diary and saw this entry about how a few people have told him they want his song “Fly Away” played at their funerals. When I spoke to him to today, he mentioned my possibly writing a song for his next album.
