Moving II ::

Dave asked if I got the cottage in Sunnyvale. Uh, no. After seeing the lease conditions, I soured on an entire class of housing. No smoking was just the tip of the iceberg. The landlords offering to share their cable connection seemed friendly on the surface, but when I considered asking for a separate hookup (because I am a bandwidth hog), I realized that the cable company probably doesn’t know there is another unit there. Then there were second thoughts about having to open/close a gate attached to the main house on those occasions when I come home at 3 am. But the kicker was $50/night for overnight guests who stayed more than 2 nights (which will happen when my kids visit)—for water and parking. Parking is on the street!

Thursday night I spotted a 2 BR up the Peninsula in Belmont that had an unusual feature, no shared walls, ceilings or floors. On a whim I decided to go see it and really liked the neighborhood, privacy, amount of space, and light; there are big south-facing windows in the living room and master BR. It’s a 10-unit building, but the apartment is separate from the other 9, over the carport. It has a deck that spans the entire south side of the apartment. Friday, after my unpleasant realization about cottages in backyards, I called the Belmont landlord and said I’d take the place. It turned out that I saved him from a pickle; in between our phone call at 3:15 and my getting there at 6 to sign the lease, he had a woman show up that he simultaneously felt sorry for and had a bad feeling about, who really really badly wanted the place and wanted to move in immediately.

I’m a little concerned about how I’ll hold up under the longer commute, though many people still drive much further, and I have been wanting to listen to music more. And it’ll be nicer to be closer to San Francisco.

Over Labor Day weekend I took a few carloads of stuff to the new place: books, CD’s, pictures. It’s good to have made room to navigate while packing what remains, but now I feel strangely “in between.” It’s hard to concentrate on any significant project while at home. Movers come on Saturday; it should take about 3 hours to move what remains, mainly gear, a few bits of furniture, and clothes.
