A pleasant surprise interrupted a busy Friday afternoon at work: Christoffer emailed, saying he’d finished the first version of the first mix (Don’t Know I Know) and that an MP3 would be following shortly. Could I please send comments to him by 1 am tonight (10 am in Sweden)?
I got wrapped up in work. An hour and a half passed. It was 5:30 pm, 2:30 am in Sweden. No mix. What had happened? I sent off an email to Christoffer, then checked my mail—there was the mix; it had hit my mailbox just a minute earlier. Ha!
I closed my office door and cranked up the speakers a bit. It was ... different. 6 weeks after last hearing the demo, I was still comparing the new version against it. But wait, I thought, I’ll try to look at this as Son of Don’t Know I Know; how does it stand on its own? That made it much better. It was still the same song, still me playing most of the parts, the same way I always play—just another interpretation of the same basic idea, made at another time, in another place, with another set of instruments.
I listened twice more in my car, once in the parking lot without car noise, and then again on the way home. Yes! Someday I will have forgotten the demo, and I’ll be comparing Granddaughter of Don’t Know I Know against this version before I stop and remember this.
