We got a lot done Monday, but not as much as I’d hoped.
Finished tracking Cobblestone Mirrors with overdubs on timpani and a Mellotron vibrophone sample.
Finished Artifacts and Fantasies: sorted out the string parts, replaced synth bass with pump organ. Made one passage sound like something from the 1950's by choosing the string track recorded through an ancient microphone, and dirtying up the piano, flute and voice tracks through tube preamps (and tape? I wasn’t watching carefully). Pizza for dinner in Sjöbo. Added timpani and cymbals (brushes, sticks and mallets). I can play percussion better than I’d thought but not as well as I’d like to. Did more very rough mixing to check transitions and make sure certain details didn’t get lost in the 81 tracks of insanity.
Started real rework of Where You Lay by transferring the post-rerrangement softsynth tracks and then playing the whole bass part live on Minimoog. Experimented with piano replacement on Fender Rhodes (no) and Hammond (definitely yes on the chorus, to be determined on the verse and bridge).
A fair amount of work remains on Where You Lay. I don’t know what’s going to happen to Agents of Change. It seems questionable that we’ll have time to do too much beyond what I demoed. We’ll see. At least those are the only two songs remaining to do overdubs on.
Tired. Stopped at 1:30, plan to start early in the morning. Must leave for Malmö by 9:30 am Wednesday.
