I’m four hours into transforming a dreamy minor-key Weather Channel background music piece into a dreamy minor-key Pink Floyd-like ... background music piece? I’m still lost in the novelty, with no idea if this will stick, but I just came across a good reminder of less-is-more.
I did one (sampled) guitar track all the way through (after setting aside a fantasy of going off to Guitar Center tomorrow and picking up a real one; I haven’t played one regularly in over 20 years and it would be a week-plus project just to learn to play this one new song badly). The part started off with an arpeggiated part a bit reminiscent of a slowed-down version of Message In a Bottle, and I played variations and elaborations on it all the way through, keeping the steady 8th notes. That was too busy; I just replaced a chord every two bars over the first 16. But no, that still sounded sequenced and mechanical. Then I remembered something Christoffer said about that track, halved the chord changes and left out a quarter or so of the 8th notes. Ah.
The track is one I did last August. Hmm, I seem to be in a similar state now, of just starting to try to get some creative momentum going.
