Tonight I made some progress on drum programming. The answer to the question of whether to use the full Alan White loops (some Gabrielized, sliced and diced by DrumCore), the individual samples, or an electronic kit in iDrum appears to be “Yes.” The current sketch uses just individual A.W. samples in the beginning, adds a mangled loop, then switches to a straight one, with kick drum, accents and fills using the samples. Then iDrum enters to make it Even Bigger, the straight A.W. loop shifts to another mangled one, and then it breaks down to just iDrum. One really cool thing about DrumCore is that the samples are the same kits used in the sampled loops, so the extra snare accents, for example, blend in well. Though some of its full sampled loops have versions without a kick drum, the ones I’m using don’t. A highpass filter does the trick well enough.
Oh, and remember the 9/16 and 15/16 bars? It turns out I was being really sloppy on the original track (previously rationalized as “loose time”). I threw out the old timeline and slid copies of the iDrum pattern around until I had a series of 4/4 bars with two detours, 5 x 5/8 and 2 x 7/8. The important beats were still in the right places. It’s not only more rhythmically solid but it makes more sense.
It’s interesting, all of the parts that gave “instant gratification” at the beginning are still around, but they’re coming alive as I add the kick and accents.

Can’t wait to hear it...

Is it apparent that I am agonizing over this track? ;-) Thanks, Keith! I had a friend come over and pick at my work in progress. He confirmed my uneasy feeling about the tom-tom fills; just because I am using real kick, snare and hihat, why should I use real toms? I have spent the last two evenings playing with ways to synthesize something strong that could be used instead ... the creature that has emerged from Absynth, based a tom sample and several flavors of FM might not be the trick, but it sure has been fun.
