Zobo Funn Band - Live at The Haunt ::

I picked up The Zobo Funn Band, Live at The Haunt, January 28, 1980 at David Arnay’s gig in Ithaca a couple weeks ago. It’s available at CD Baby now.

I listen to this music and I don’t even want to try to write “objectively” about it. The band’s sound is so deeply imprinted that I popped in the CD and it’s as if I’d just heard it a week or two ago, despite only having listened to tapes a few times over the years. Yet here the band’s picture sits on the cover of a CD. CD’s didn’t exist in 1980. I was so idealistic back then, and this music made my soul sing. It sings again when I listen.

Some will want to check out what David Torn sounded like back then.

I hear Jeremy Werbin’s voice and I remember being blessed to play with him for a year or so in 1987-88, including a gig a week or so after my first son was born. I remember his unfortunate early death in 1997 and playing a medley of piano versions of a few of his Zobo tunes at the memorial service. I miss him, I miss those days, I miss this music; this world needs more like it.

  2. Jeremy gave me a tape in 1982 of tracks from his band ‘Werband’. I have transcribed it to CD. It’s very good, though I can’t possibly be objective either. The tracks are: Sunlight Ballet, Doing Time, Over the Edge, Julia Paradise, We Could Sail Through Time, Out of the Valley, Castles in Blue, Shiver and Shake, Paradise Revisited and Yes You Do.
Send me a note if you are interested in hearing it and I’ll find a way to get it to you.

  3. This is for Larry F.:  I’ve been looking everywhere for someone who has “sunlight ballet" —I have been wanting to hear that song again for 25 years!  Is there a way to get that from you?  I just ordered the Live at the Haunt CD but as you know, Sunlight is missing....

  4. hi larry,
one way and another, i found this posting. i’ve spent the evening listening to my old tapes, playing them for my kids, remembering. i’ve got several tapes, which i am going to put on cd and i would be happy to share them.  please get in touch if you like and send word on to others. i am touched still that my encountering jeremy somehow inspired a song. he was a wonderful lyricist and musician and a lovely human being. may his memory be for a blessing. i remember him.

  5. Larry,

    I just found this site...

Might you copy for me the CD you made of the Werband?  It would mean a lot to me to hear Jeremy again.

Doug, have you ever recorded your Zobo piano medley?  I came to Ithaca from the Midwest for Jeremy’s memorial service and I listened to your medley with a big smile on my face and tears on my cheeks.

What extraordinary music that man made.  I was glad to know him.

  6. I need a good way to get you all the digital copy of the songs. Is there a secure way for you to get me your email?
