Last week Justin wrote and asked about my trip to NY and how my composing/recording was going.
In Ithaca, Peter had had to cancel our session to add a couple of bass tracks, but seemed willing to try it remotely. It was just as well; now I have a chance to tighten up some of the other tracks before adding more. And I’d jammed with Pat and Chisa in Shandaken, and Tony in NYC, and came home with a few sketches and the jam with Tony on my hard disk. I’d also bumped into an acquaintance on the Ithaca Commons, Jason, who gave me a CD of his music. When I listened, I quickly realized that he could add some great drum programming to some of my tracks (I tend to run out of patience when trying to do drums).
So I told Justin that it was tempting to think I’d accomplished nothing concrete these last few weeks, but actually I had planted many seeds. Now it’s time for weeding and watering.
I spent a lot of time last week going over the bits in front of me: there are one or two portions of the jam with Tony that I’d like to develop, one or two improvs recorded in Ithaca that could turn into something, and one I did before going to NY, and want to transcribe and re-record. FedEx tried to deliver Finale Guitar today (the guy at Sweetwater recommended it as an inexpensive lite version), and I’ll give it a spin soon.
Inspiration strikes in funny ways—after forcing myself to clean my apartment instead of spend Saturday in headphones, I was awakened at 3:30 am Sunday, sat at the keyboards, and came up with a sketch that grabbed me. I made a start on developing it tonight, learning and doubling the original synth part on piano, and putting together an ambient bed for the first 30 seconds or so. I’m beginning to see its shape.
