Art before commerce ::

I bought myself Fux’s The Study of Counterpoint for my birthday and read the first chapter the other night. In the first dialogue between the master and the would-be student of composition, the master agrees to accept the student only after the student says he does not wish to learn composition based on “the hope of future riches and possessions.”

I remember a moment when I was in Red Letter, when Robby Aceto told me that his idea of musical success was making just enough money to be able to afford to make more records (I’m paraphrasing, but that was the gist of it).

Into my Inbox just arrived an email from Innerviews, telling me about a new interview with Dhamaal Soundsystem, “an innovative San Francisco Asian electronica collective.” “Apart from the music, these guys have some interesting stories to tell about the life choices that brought them to Dhamaal. It’s a fascinating case study about putting art before commerce.” I gotta go hear them...
