I learned how to do this last month but forgot. Here’s how to automate busses and their inserts in Logic 6.
In the Environment’s Audio page, add a Channel Splitter (I named mine “Bus auto”). Then connect the splitter’s individual MIDI channels to busses, according to each bus’s receive channel (I only needed to automate 2 busses in this example.) Make sure the bus automation mode is on (Read in this example).
Now in the Arrange window, you can assign a track to the channel splitter, send automation events on any MIDI channel, and have them control the appropriate parameter. To automate an effect parameter, I believe you’ll need to insert a fader to convert a MIDI controller message to a fader message.
