More on building readline ::
Google seems to like to send people to my earlier entry on building gnu readline as a dynamic library on Mac OS X.
Here are two simpler ways to get readline for Python on Panther (as a static library, though you may prefer that):

pimp. - Bill Bumgarner has instructions on building readline statically
