I’ve been playing with the alpha version of Kazoo, a “light synthesizer for real-time performance of visual music” from Optical Alchemy. Mark Buchanan used Kazoo to project images to accompany the music at my birthday party and at our Ducks To Water performance in June. One of the presets is called “Mandala Bliss,” and the fractal imaging algorithm can produce some rather mandala-like effects, so I found a picture of a mandala, threw an alpha channel on it, and imported it into Kazoo. Fun! ...
V and I rented The Pianist Friday night. It was interesting to have seen this soon after Life Is Beautiful; they’re both stories of survival amidst the most horrible conditions. It was stunning, I kept thinking, this is horrible, this really happened, things can’t get worse, but they did, again and again. Yet I knew he would play again in the end; the question was, how? Adrien Brody’s actually playing (at least some if not all of) the music was special; I’m really sensitive to music not matching what an actor’s hands are doing and it was clear that we were hearing and seeing real performances, even if perhaps some digital assembly was required.
I’ve finished my pass through my tape archives, restoring and remastering some old recordings. Last night I burned some CDs with cover art, to send to friends. ...
