Union Square
Asian Art Museum

I like it when friends visit from out of town; I get to be a tourist in my own backyard. I hadn’t been to Muir Woods in about 12 years. My friends remarked that, other than the spectacular redwoods, it reminded them of their native Thailand. We came across the rose garden in Golden Gate Park by luck; it was just beginning to bloom (note to self: go back next weekend). I’d never seen the Japanese tea garden there and liked it a lot. There was a bit of regret at having forgotten my camera the first day, but J took a lot of photos and promised to have the film processors put them on the web.

The second day, my friends did some shopping around Union Square while I got to wander the streets and fill in some gaps in my mental map of the city. The Asian Art Museum has free admission on the first Tuesday of the month, so we were in luck at not having to pay, though that was probably why it was quite crowded. I particularly enjoyed this Buddha, a brightly colored Tibetan rendering of the Heart Sutra, and some Chinese paintings of mountains.
