The state of the record industry ::

Janis Ian writes [broken link] in the LA Times: “The RIAA says it is doing all this to make more money for me and other artists like me, but don’t be fooled.” Amen, but things will only get better when more artists and consumers refuse to participate in the system the way it’s being run by the RIAA.

I went digging for an article I’d read a few years back about how the average band who gets a record deal ends up broke and under contractual obligation to a record company that won’t pay for them to make another album... or promote it if they do... couldn’t find the article, but there are must be hundreds of similar stories.

Salon: Embrace file-sharing, or die. Quoting Thomas Jefferson:

“He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.”

– Thomas Jefferson

From the article: “instead of creating new content and allowing long-standing laws to work, the entertainment business frantically seeks to manipulate the process to its own ends.” The article is a deep and most astute analysis of the current situation.
