Venice, Van Gogh, and gardens ::

Saturday morning’s Ithaca Journal ran an AP photo of Venice’s Piazza of San Marco flooded (not these vacation photos, but similar except in cloudy daylight). Italy’s going to spend $450M to postpone Venice’s sinking into the ocean. I told my parents about B having mentioned the flooding and the funny coincidence that had followed in Amsterdam.

That afternoon I wandered around the Ithaca Commons. Of the perhaps 25 books in the window of Ithaca Books, 3 were connected to recent themes: [1] a book on Venice, [2] a book on Van Gogh (I had planned to go to the Van Gogh museum that day in Amsterdam but spontaneously decided to walk around the area instead, encountering the garden that reminded me of another garden), [3] a book strongly connected in two ways to the garden theme through a friend, M. I looked for other connected books. No, only those three seemed to be resonating.

Despite having just finished a cup of coffee, 5 minutes later I went into another coffeeshop, where I was pleasantly surprised to hear the title track of Miles Davis’ In a Silent Way. Besides being one of my favorite pieces of music, it has special connections to both friends, M and B.
