As if to put an exclamation point on seeing SUVs at the S.F. airport after 10 days in Europe, the San Jose Mercury had a front page article about the Hummer the next morning. I liked these letters to the editor.
Despite (as I learned today on NPR) the U.S. having led the world in environmental protection during the Nixon era, I feel strongly that a failing in free-market economics (in addition to future generations not being able to bid on today’s resources) is that the environmental costs of disposing of a product are not included in the product’s sale price.
This week the Merc ran a series on the horrible ecological consequences of the PC recycling industry that has sprung up in a rural province of China.
And I just read an article today about the benefits of disposable DVD’s; you don’t have to drive your SUV back to Blockbuster.
