Power of Pride ::
Either I’m turning into a horrible curmudgeon, or I have tuned into a muse who translates secretly encoded cultural messages, e.g. in patriotic music. Today I saw an American flag bumpersticker with the words “Power of Pride.” The muse whispered a translation: “Proud of Power.”

As if to put an exclamation point on seeing SUVs at the S.F. airport after 10 days in Europe, the San Jose Mercury had a front page article about the Hummer the next morning. I liked these letters to the editor. ...
