Mix magazine has a good article on audio in Mac OS X 10.2.
Minor nit: the article doesn’t properly distinguish Audio Units (a new plug-in format available system-wide) from the Core Audio HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer), which is the application interface to audio hardware (taking the place of Sound Manager and ASIO, though Sound Manager remains in place for backward compatibility). Apple’s audio technologies page is a good starting point for more info.
