Fog had closed Heathrow, so we were routed to San Francisco through Vancouver, where flights to the U.S. have their own partitioned area; one goes through U.S. Customs here rather than at one’s destination. CNN offered a first opportunity to catch up on current events (haven’t gotten much news at all in 10 days). I was too tired to give the screen more than a glance. B noted that the name of the special program was “Bush’s War” and that they were talking about plans for the U.S. to set up a colonial government in Iraq.
Upon emerging from baggage claim to the sidewalk at SFO, I saw taxis with idling engines and the largest passenger vehicles (short of buses) which I’d seen in 10 days. I couldn’t imagine trying to park an SUV in any of the European cities I’d visited.
