B and I saw a severely tilted old building in Amsterdam. I asked if it was because the city is sinking. He replied, no, Amsterdam is on much more solid ground than Venice. He told a story of having been to Venice and gone to Piazza of San Marco at high tide, when it had been flooded to the extent they’d had to put out planks for people to walk on. People were sitting outside cafes in this flooded plaza and he described his impression of the scene as people sitting around in decadent luxury while watching the end of the world. I said, “like lying on the deck chairs of the Titanic while it sinks.”
Less than 5 minutes later, we were along a canal and saw a boat christened “Titanic.”
