post-Columbine ::

I realized that I hadn’t updated this page in forever, and wondered why. It occurred to me that in my own web-surfing, I’ve spent much more time recently at commercial websites than at people’s personal sites.

Television should have made what I’m about to say clear to me already, but as a member of a raised-on-TV generation, I guess it’s a blind spot. One of our society’s more basic ills is that we spend a lot of time connected to the mass media, being passive recipients of information, rather than connecting with other people in a more active way.

Should we be surprised that lonely, alienated teenagers reach such a level of desperation that they feel they must use guns to connect to other people through the mass media?
