Telecommuting from the snow ::

Here’s a QuickCam picture of the snow in the bushes and tree outside my office window this morning:

I returned home to Ithaca from a trip to California recently to read a newspaper opinion piece about how Cornell hasn’t done enough to promote economic development from technology spinoffs. The article cited Silicon Valley, where I lived from 1988-1991 and had returned from visiting, as an example (with Stanford, of course).

At Thanksgiving my relatives seemed to agree that one of the local economy’s unmentioned problems is the climate. It’s not as snowy as Syracuse or Buffalo, but Ithaca is one of the cloudiest places in the nation, second to Seattle, I’m told. One does develop an appreciation for the beauty of gray, however. And one could also see the inclimate winters as an impetus to focused creative work. With any luck I will have a CD’s worth of music finished soon.

The local paper also recently had a feature on a local programmer who telecommutes from Ithaca to somewhere else. Sounds familiar. My dad thinks that Ithaca could become a telecommuter’s haven.
