Speaking of large corporations appropriating the pop music of the 70's in order to appeal to post-boomer 30-somethings, you’ve probably seen the AT&T ad featuring Elton John’s Rocket Man. They did a slick job of audio editing in order to keep the lyrics they like and remove the ones that are completely contrary to the desired message of the commercial. For example, the chorus is “Rocket man, burning out his fuse out there alone.” But of course, the ad is selling technology as “the next best thing to being there,” so they only kept “Rocket man.” Keep the cool image. Never mind the part about the alienation and separation is too often a result of our love affair with technology. ...
