I remember the thing I always told myself when I was young, about making music, was to never give up! But I haven’t been making music, until this weekend. It’s reassuring to realize, one can always “un-give up,” though it’s certainly better not have given up at all. As with lots of things in life, being creative involves a psychological continuity, concentration, momentum.
I just read a Pat Metheny interview where he talks about how copping someone else’s style is just about the most disrespectful thing you can do. That’s a really interestingly opposite of an idea that floats around some circles about how styles are these nice little boxes that things fit into, clothes which the supposedly talented artist can exchange at any time.
The best thing about improvising is that it puts you in touch with the essence of your own unique approach, your own style that isn’t copping anyone else’s. Maybe better compositions are a sort of highly practiced improvisation.
