misc. ::

We had a sneak preview of summer: 90 degrees plus for a few days. The program no longer matches the documentation: my beard is gone.

Design Patterns (Ganna/Helm/Johnson/Vlissides, Addison-Wesley) is a compendium of general approaches to various object-oriented programming designs. For me it tended towards a statement of the obvious at times, yet I still found it valuable as a formal description of the various patterns, a validation of patterns I’d already observed, and a suggestion of other new ones.

I finished Eco’s Foucault’s Pendulum during a recent trip. An utterly amazing book. It seems that whenever I’ve met a really interesting person lately, he or she has read it.

My ISDN connection is finally up and running smoothly. There’s plenty of blame to be passed around between the various vendors involved and myself. I had an ISDN page but it was silly. Dan Kegel’s ISDN Page is the best starting point. It’s certainly not cheap ($1000 in equipment [I have multiple computers...] and, between the phone company and ISP, around $100/month). I wouldn’t pay for it just to be a fast websurfer. But it’s my telecommuter’s lifeline, well worth it to have a faster connection to the office.
